The McClay Library Expansion Project – November 2018 Update

This is the second of a series of regular updates planned for the 2018-19 academic year which will keep you informed on progress of the McClay Library Phase 3 expansion project.

The project is progressing well with most of the work currently concentrated in the area which is being extended outside Short Loan and in the courtyard area behind Borrower Services.

No particularly disruptive work is anticipated over the next few weeks.

In the meantime, if you have any particular feedback or questions, please contact: afbilib@qub.ac.uk.

McClay Library Expansion Project – October 2018 Update

This is the first of a series of regular updates planned for the 2018-19 academic year which will keep you informed on progress of the McClay Library Phase 3 expansion project. This project will realise a significant number of additional PCs and study seats in the library and involves the following key elements:

  • The courtyard area on the ground floor (behind Borrower Services and Short Loan) is being re-developed to provide over 100 PCs and 9 additional group study rooms.
  • The student lounge on the ground floor will be doubled in size.
  • A new silent study room with 67 seats will be created at the bottom of the atrium
  • Additional study seats and PCs will be added to floors 1 and 3.

The extended facility will be available to students from autumn 2019.

Unfortunately, there will be some unavoidable building noise and disruption to your studies over the months ahead but we will do everything we can to minimize this and to give you plenty of warning should the work threaten to impact on you adversely.

In the meantime, if you have any particular feedback or questions, please contact: afbilib@qub.ac.uk.

Library Satisfaction Survey 2015

Thank you to all who responded to the 2015 Satisfaction Survey. We had a pleasing response rate of 7%. We were delighted with the positive comments from AFBI library members. You commented, in particular, on the helpfulness of library staff, the swift response to requests for journal articles and the ease of use of AFBI Library Online. We shall endeavour to continue to deliver a high standard of service to you and respond to suggestions made so do please contact us if we can help in any way.

Some sample comments from the Library satisfaction survey:

  • I have always found the staff to be extremely helpful with any queries I may have.
  • I particularly find AFBI online library useful for when I am not able to visit the library myself.
  • The library at VSD is a good mix of computers and desks. It is very organised and quiet enough to study in.
  • I appreciate email reminders when books are due to be returned.
  • I would like to mention that the library staff in VSD Stormont are extremely helpful, friendly and interested in the staff and their work. As well as providing a great service, and going far out of their way to help, their interacting with the staff by holding Christmas coffee mornings etc is greatly appreciated.

Don't get caught out: Think. Check. Submit - new online tool to help researchers choose where to publish

Launched on 1st October, Think. Check. Submit., is a new campaign that helps researchers evaluate journals prior to submitting their work for publication. The campaign highlights the increasing risk to publishers from predatory open access publishers – unknown publishers who commonly solicit article submissions via spam emails and request payment of article processing charges, but lack any discernible scholarship or academic credibility.

The tool provides a checklist of quality indicators that can help researchers identify if a journal is a trustworthy place to submit research and is available at: http://thinkchecksubmit.org/

A report highlighting the increasing number of publications that fail to meet many of the characteristics outlined in the Think. Check. Submit check list can be read here: http://www.biomedcentral.com/1741-7015/13/230

AFBI Library refurbishments

The AFBI Library is currently undertaking some work on refurbishing the libraries on the Loughgall and Hillsborough sites.  The plan is to make the libraries a more pleasant environment for study and reading.  Both libraries will undergo a stock weed to ensure that there is a core book collection and were e-access is available print journals will be reduced.  This will enable space to be freed up to create causal seating areas for reading or informal discussions.  In addition PC access will be upgraded to ensure that library users on these sites have a dedicated computer for quick and easy access to electronic resources available via AFBI Library Online.  Remember if you can’t find what you are looking for in the local library just contact the Newforge library ( agriclib@qub.ac.uk or 028 90255227) and staff will be happy to send, directly to your work location, any books you require or photocopy articles on your behalf.

Thank you for your patience during this work and we hope you will enjoy using the new library spaces on each of these sites.
